Everything you need to know about 3D printing in India

How Much Does 3D Printing Cost in India?

3D printing cost in India depends on material, size, and complexity. At FOFUS, custom 3D printing starts from ₹199 per print. Material pricing: PLA at ₹2.50/g, PETG at ₹3.50/g, ABS at ₹5.00/g, Silicon at ₹20/g, and Fibre-reinforced PETG at ₹10/g. Machine rate is ₹15-50/hour depending on build chamber. The final price = (filament weight × material rate) + (print time × machine rate). For an instant estimate, use our quote calculator — it runs real slicing on your STL file, not estimates.

What File Format Do I Need for 3D Printing?

The most common 3D printing file formats are STL, 3MF, and OBJ. STL is the industry standard — almost every 3D printer and slicing software accepts it. 3MF is newer and carries color and material information. OBJ supports textures. FOFUS accepts STL, 3MF, and OBJ files. If you don't have a 3D file, send us a photo or sketch and our team will create the model. For 3D scanning output, we provide STL, OBJ, PLY, GLB, and USDZ formats.

FDM vs SLA 3D Printing — What's the Difference?

FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) melts plastic filament layer by layer — best for large parts, functional prototypes, and cost-effective printing. Materials: PLA, PETG, ABS, TPU. SLA (Stereolithography) uses a laser to cure liquid resin — best for high-detail miniatures, jewellery patterns, and dental models. FOFUS offers both: our FDM fleet (Bambu Lab A1, 256³mm and 300³mm build volume) handles most jobs, and SLA resin printers handle fine-detail work.

Is 3D Printing Cheaper Than Injection Molding?

For low-volume production (1-500 units), 3D printing is significantly cheaper than injection molding because there are zero tooling costs. Injection mold tooling starts at ₹50,000+ and takes weeks. 3D printing has no setup cost — you pay per part. For high-volume production (5000+ units), injection molding becomes cheaper per unit. FOFUS bridges the gap: use 3D printing for prototyping and small batches, then transition to molding for mass production. We help with both.

How to Start a 3D Printing Business in India

Starting a 3D printing business in India requires: (1) a 3D printer (FDM starts at ₹15,000, professional grade ₹50,000+), (2) CAD design skills or a partner who can design, (3) material suppliers, (4) GST registration for B2B clients. FOFUS offers a franchise model — we provide designs, training, and customer leads while you handle printing. Contact us on WhatsApp +91-98958-54640 to explore franchise opportunities. GeM registration opens government procurement orders.

What Is Additive Manufacturing and Rapid Prototyping?

Additive manufacturing is the industrial term for 3D printing — building objects by adding material layer by layer, as opposed to subtractive manufacturing (CNC milling) which removes material. Rapid prototyping uses additive manufacturing to quickly create physical prototypes from CAD designs — typically in 24-48 hours instead of weeks. FOFUS offers rapid prototyping services in Kerala with PLA, PETG, ABS, and resin materials. Upload your STL to quote.fofus.in for instant pricing.

Can I 3D Print from a Photo?

Yes. FOFUS converts photos into 3D models in two ways: (1) Maker AI — upload any photo, our AI generates a 3D model for ₹29, delivered on WhatsApp. (2) Manual 3D design — our team sculpts a 3D model from your photo or sketch. For accurate replicas of physical objects, use our 3D scanning service at ₹1,800/hour. The scanned STL can then be modified and 3D printed.

What Is the Minimum Order for 3D Printing?

FOFUS has no strict minimum order quantity. Single prints start from ₹199. For bulk orders (10+ pieces), we offer discounted wholesale pricing. B2B clients (schools, temples, businesses, resellers) get custom quotes. Minimum order value is ₹199. Whether you need one custom figurine or 500 production parts, FOFUS handles it. GST invoice (18%) is provided for all orders.

How Accurate Is 3D Printing?

FDM 3D printing accuracy is typically ±0.2mm to ±0.5mm depending on layer height (0.12mm to 0.28mm) and calibration. SLA resin printing achieves ±0.05mm — suitable for dental models and jewellery patterns. For higher accuracy, 3D scanning captures detail down to 0.04mm. FOFUS calibrates printers before every print run and quality-checks every part before shipping.

What Materials Are Best for My Project?

Choose by use case: PLA (₹2.50/g) — gifts, decor, display models, biodegradable. PETG (₹3.50/g) — functional parts, food-safe containers, outdoor use. ABS (₹5.00/g) — heat-resistant parts, mechanical components, automotive. TPU/Silicon (₹20/g) — flexible parts, molds, skin-safe. Fibre-reinforced (₹10/g) — structural and automotive parts. Not sure? WhatsApp us your requirements and we'll recommend the right material.

3D Printing vs CNC Machining — Which to Choose?

3D printing is additive (builds up material) — best for complex geometries, hollow parts, and low-volume production. CNC machining is subtractive (cuts from solid block) — best for metal parts, high precision, and smooth surface finish. 3D printing is cheaper for prototypes and complex shapes. CNC is better for end-use metal parts. FOFUS focuses on 3D printing but offers 3D scanning for reverse engineering into CAD models that CNC shops can use.

How Long Does 3D Printing Take?

Print time depends on model size, layer height, infill, and material. Small items (keychain, nameplate): 1-3 hours. Medium items (figurine, decor): 4-10 hours. Large items (big sculpture, prototype): 12-30+ hours. At FOFUS, ready-made designs ship within 1-2 days. Custom designs take 3-5 business days from approval. Bulk orders are scheduled based on quantity. Need it fast? WhatsApp us for rush printing.

What is the difference between FDM and SLA 3D printing?
FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) melts plastic filament layer by layer — best for large parts, functional prototypes, and cost-effective printing. SLA (Stereolithography) uses a laser to cure liquid resin — best for high-detail miniatures, jewellery patterns, and dental models. FOFUS offers both technologies. FDM layer height ranges 0.12-0.28mm; SLA achieves 0.025mm layers.
Is 3D printing cheaper than injection molding?
For low-volume production (1-500 units), 3D printing is significantly cheaper — zero tooling costs. Injection mold tooling starts at ₹50,000+ and takes weeks. For 5000+ units, injection molding becomes cheaper per unit. FOFUS bridges the gap: 3D print for prototyping and small batches, then transition to molding for mass production.
How accurate is 3D printing?
FDM accuracy is ±0.2mm to ±0.5mm depending on layer height and calibration. SLA resin printing achieves ±0.05mm — suitable for dental models and jewellery patterns. 3D scanning captures detail down to 0.04mm. FOFUS calibrates printers before every print run and quality-checks every part.
Can 3D printing be used for mass production?
Yes, for small to medium batches (10-500 units). 3D printing has no tooling costs, making it ideal for mass customization — each part can be different without extra setup. For 5000+ identical units, injection molding is more cost-effective. FOFUS handles both: 3D print the prototypes and small batches, then tool up for injection molding at scale.
What is additive manufacturing?
Additive manufacturing is the industrial term for 3D printing — building objects by adding material layer by layer. It's the opposite of subtractive manufacturing (CNC milling) which removes material from a solid block. Additive manufacturing reduces waste, enables complex geometries impossible with traditional methods, and allows rapid iteration. FOFUS is an additive manufacturing service provider in Kerala, India.
Do you offer reverse engineering services?
Yes. FOFUS offers reverse engineering through 3D scanning — we scan a physical object, convert the mesh to a CAD model (STL to STEP/IGES), and then it can be modified, reproduced, or manufactured. This is commonly used for automotive parts, legacy components, and jewellery duplication. Learn more about 3D scanning →
